Gifts Are Made to Be Given

Gift. That word typically has a positive connotation to it – especially if you happen to be on the receiving end of said gift. However, when this word is used to describe an ability –specifically our personal abilities –we hesitate. Why do some of us struggle so much with admitting and/or sharing our gifts and talents with others? Oftentimes it boils down to worth or levels of capability. Then, the voices of doubt come to mind saying, “Do people really want to hear what I have to say?” “What makes my gift stand out compared to anyone else’s?”

The answer: God is the creator and ultimate gift-giver. It’s Him who gives gifts to whom He sees fit. Who are we to hold back the gifts that God placed in us? This reminds me of the story of Gideon from Judges 6:14-16:

“The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?”

“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”

The Lord answered, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive.”

If you’ve ever read this chapter before you know that Gideon had every excuse. He truly did not believe he was capable of what God himself was telling he could do.

Not convinced? Here are three more scriptures from Romans 8 to show your gift is for others’ benefit:

1) Romans 8: 12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it.

Our obligation is to be led by the spirit of God. We do this when we courageously walk in our purpose.

2) Romans 8:19 For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.

The world (whether it recognizes it or not) is waiting on you to be revealed. There are people who need to hear your story, your music, your experiences, your words. They will recognize you by your gifts and good deeds.

3) Romans 8:33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies.

God has chosen you and He believes that you are more than up for the job. Just as He did for Gideon, it’s easy for God to justify your qualifications—He gave them to you. Let no one—not even you—bring a case against you because you were born for this.

Gifts were made to be given, not hidden.

Your gift isn’t for you. It’s for others to be delivered and set free! The world is waiting on your “yes”.
